Fall/ Winter Bucket List: A Day at the High Bridge

Ironically, these pictures are from October. Ironic because I look like I'm dressed for December, whereas I have not had to put a hat on since then, even though it's now actually December.

Anyway. Cold weather aside, one Sunday afternoon, Talia, Talya and I set out for the High Bridge. (They are not pictured because they never signed their release form. By which I mean I promised not to put them on the blog without their permission, which they never gave me.)

For those of you not familiar with what the High Bridge is-- it's the oldest standing bridge in New York City! Many years ago, the High Bridge was a main connector, allowing people to walk from the Bronx to Manhattan and back. Then, for many years, it was closed and left to decay. But after a renovation, it's now back and really beautiful. There's a park on the Manhattan side, including many outdoor sculptures. Hence the picture above.

After spending a little bit of time exploring the park, we wandered over the bridge itself. It was described to me as a less crowded High Line. That wasn't completely accurate; it lacks the urban agricultural feel and flowers that you have at the High Line. However, it is also very beautiful, and definitely less crowded. It has been beautifully restored, and there are plaques on the ground which tell the history of the bridge, its surrounding area, and the different ways water has been transported into the city. I give it an enthusiastic two thumbs up.

The view from the bridge.
Let's talk a bit about my outfit, and then I will leave you some more pretty pictures. I wanted to dress in layers because of the freakishly cold weather. I went with my transitional seasons coat, which I believe I bought at Filene's Basement back when that was a thing, which tells you how old it is. It has held up very well. But because my coat and skirt were both black, I also wanted to add some color. The solution? Colored tights, a patterned scarf, and a sparkly hat. I am super into this hat. It's not itchy and warm but not too warm. It's sparkly, but not obnoxiously so. What else could a girl want?

Summer Bucket List: Governors Island

Dear friends, I have so much to tell you about! I just went through my pictures and realized I am two weeks behind. Yikes! I shall try to catch up in the next week or so.

As you know if you have been reading for a while, I am in the midst of studying for the last of my comprehensive exams for my doctorate. The phrase "so close and yet so far" has never felt quite so applicable to my life. Since I have to spend so much of my time reading, I have been trying to do it in beautiful places.

One of those beautiful places was Governors Island. Governors Island is just south of Manhattan, which means it only takes $2 and a 5 minute ferry ride to get there. It is only open from late spring through early fall, but it is one of my favorite spots. It's super quiet, right on the water, has lots to do, and there are no cars. There are art shows, playgrounds and minigolf for kids, and a giant tree house. Also, there are hammocks. I love me some hammocks.

The plan had been to lie in said hammock and read, but it was a little too hot and the hammocks are all in the sun, so I had to relocate to a lawn chair under a tree. I know, life is hard. It was a beautiful day and I actually read two whole books, so a productive one too. There's something to be said for getting away from your computer when you actually want to get work done.

And, of course, I had to explore a little bit, and take some pictures.

Not a bad view for reading, right?

After looking at these pictures, I think I'm done with this skirt. It sits lower now than it used to, and I am not convinced it is super flattering. Or at least, there are certainly better options in my closet. So good bye, random British skirt. You served me well for the last five years.

Happy One Monthaversary!

Guys, the blog is one month old today! Can you believe it? They grow up so fast...

Today was one of those perfect New York days. Sometimes, in the winter, when it's endlessly cold and there are disgusting piles of black snow at every curb and slush puddles at every corner, I understand why people would want to live elsewhere. But then spring comes and it's a mystery to me again.

The flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, and everyone is in a good mood. That is why the kind gentlemen who I asked to take my picture in the park not only obliged, but both staged mini-photo shoots with me. These pictures are the fruits of their labors.

Look! Real flowers! Spring!

In honor of the weather, I decided to wear my skirt with trees on it. This skirt and I had quite a saga, with three rounds of buying and returning. I loved the print, fabric and pockets, but the shape was a little weird, which made it hard for me to figure out how to wear it. When it went on crazy sale, I ordered it again. This time, I went down a size and ordered it in the long length, which worked much better. The shape seems more natural as a high waisted full skirt. It's still not the most flattering thing I own, but it's fun enough that I wear it anyway.

New glasses! Thanks Warby Parker!
Today also marked the debut of my new glasses. I have a few pairs, since I wear them every day, and I ordered these from Warby Parker a few months ago. There were some problems with my prescription and other such things so the process took much longer than expected, but I have to commend Warby Parker for having excellent customer service.
Me, chilling with Eleanor Roosevelt. Obviously.
That's all from here for now. I hope you're all enjoying reading the blog as much as I'm enjoying writing it. If you have questions, comments, or things you want me to write about, leave a note in the comments or email me here!

What's your favorite spring activity? What about your favorite spring outfit?

P.S. My aunt sent me this cool Buzzfeed about style charts. If you're into charts like I am, check it out here.
